Almost everyone has had the unpleasant experience of being bitten by a mosquito. Mosquito bites can cause severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva - this is what causes the red bump and itching. Mosquitoes do not actually "bite" humans; they "feed" on them. Female mosquitoes require protein to produce their eggs and obtain this protein from the blood of humans and other animals. A mosquito’s lifecycle has four stages – egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Mosquitoes need water to breed, any water, since all mosquitoes spend their larval and pupal stages in water. Therefore, mosquitoes can always be found around water. Most adult mosquitoes wind up as food for birds, dragonflies, or spiders. Others succumb to the effects of wind, rain, and drought. Those that don’t may persist for as long as 2-3 months and adults that hibernate can live as long 6-8 months. Only in the last century has it been known that mosquitoes are capable of spreading disease. The diseases are often viruses that are picked up by the mosquito when it feeds on an infected host. When the mosquito then feeds on another host, it can then spread the virus. Mosquitoes are known to have carried diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dog heartworm, and viral encephalitis. Mosquitoes do not transmit AIDS. Tips to Guard against Mosquitoes Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, soda cans or similar water-holding containers that have accumulated on your property. Check potted plant saucers, roof gutters and drains regularly for any leaves and stagnant water. Change water in birdbaths and wading pools on a weekly basis. Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. Be aware that mosquitoes may even breed in the water that collects on swimming pool covers. Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are most active. Make sure your home has ‘bug proof’ screens on all doors and windows. Water your garden early in the day to avoid un-evaporated water left overnight where mosquitoes will use as breeding grounds. Keep Zanzare Insect Repellent Products handy for when you need them.
Remember that mosquitoes do not need a lot of water to breed - and they are not picky as to what kind of water. Also, they don’t usually ‘feed’ more than ten meters from where they breed, so if you have a lot of mosquitoes at home - you’re probably giving them the grounds to breed!
